The challenge
To design the first inland surf cove in Scotland, on the site of the former Ratho Quarry in Edinburgh; providing innovative and cost effective solutions to a challenging site.
To develop a design that meets the precise engineering requirements of the wave cove technology, alongside the sensitive regeneration of a former quarry site to form an outstanding public park and destination
Our solution
We have worked collaboratively and flexibly with our local design partners, the Spanish wavegarden team, and an energetic and driven client.
We have ensured that sustainability and innovation have been at the heart of the design solutions for the site. Extensive and detailed investigations have been undertaken to understand the existing quarry and the fill materials; we are targeting 100% re-use of materials on site; we are using site won armour stone and fill material to form engineered terraces with earth reinforced slopes around the park; and we are sourcing water for the cove from the union canal, into which we will also drain our suds system, therefore creating a sustainable balance throughout the year.
We have used BIM to great effect, accurately modelling and coordinating the structural cove solution with the complex M&E and specialist equipment, both above and below ground; exchanging models between disciplines and between Scotland and Spain.
