Cameron House Hotel - reinstatement

The challenge

Cameron House Hotel is a listed building of real historic importance, nestled at the southern end of Loch Lomond. After the tragic fire of 2017, the internal elements of the original part of the building was almost entirely lost. We were called to assist in the immediate aftermath of the fire, aiding Fire and Rescue Services, Police and the hotel’s owners to assess the stability of the remaining structure. Our challenge thereafter was to help save the external fabric of this valuable building and design a replacement internal structure.

Our solution

The design has included a substantial facade retention system; allowing us to hold up and save the external building fabric, whilst completely rebuilding the internal structure. Working closely with heritage architects and the Planning Authorities, the most careful demolition and dismantling of materials was necessary in order to salvage as much as possible for use in the re-construction phase. A raft foundation was used and supports an entirely new steel frame which carries insitu concrete floor slabs. The weather is challenging in this location and a temporary roof was installed over the entire building to allow completion of the internals in dry conditions and mitigate programme risk.
